“See! I told you we’d make up plenty of time!” squib smiled proudly.
“Yeah, Miss Know-It-All,” CrashCarson said playfully teasing her, “we knew you’d know the right answer!”
“Thanks for figuring all that out, squib,” Jandelee said.
“Hey look! We’ve caught up to the Greasers!” CrashCarson pointed out. They could see the black and red car with its hood up and the three Greasers standing around it looking very defeated.
“They look like they need help,” Jandelee said. “Should we pull over?”
“No way!” CrashCarson said. “They wouldn’t do it for us!”
“Does that really matter?” squib asked.
They all took a moment to think about what squib had said.
“I guess you’re right,” CrashCarson said. “Let’s help them out!”
They pulled into the parking lot right alongside the Greasers.
NotMiceElf watched the Geeks climb out of their car. “Here to gloat?” he asked cynically.
“More like help,” said squib matter-of-factly.
“Yeah, what’s the matter?” Jandelee asked.
“The Jocks were here a couple of hours ago. They messed with the engine,” Loderse explained. “We know how to fix the car, we just don’t have the tools.”
“Oh excellent! So you know what to do?” CrashCarson asked happily.
“Yes,” Moiraine said, “but knowing what to do is no good if the knowing of it is not accompanied by that which it would be helpful to have to assist in the process of that which we know. Savvy?”
“Um, sure,” Jandelee said uncertainly. “But I think we can help!” She popped the trunk of her car and pulled out a large green toolbox. “You should find everything you need in there,” she smiled.
“You’re toolbox is in better shape than your car,” notMiceElf commented, noticing how clean it was.
“Yeah well, we may not know how to use the tools but if we ever breakdown, someone who does would be able to help,” Jandelee explained.
“Better safe than sorry!” squib added.
Loderse and notMiceElf started to work on the car. In just a few minutes, Moiraine turned the key and the engine roared to life!
“Excellent!” “Yes!” “Awesome!” They all celebrated.
“Thanks so much, guys,” Loderse said.
“You’re welcome,” squib said. “You would have done the same for us.”
There was an awkward pause.
“Wait,” notMiceElf broke the silence. “Why don’t do the same for them?” He looked from Moiraine to Loderse. They both understood what he meant. At once, they lifted the hood of the Geeks’ car and went to work.
The Geeks looked on nervously. After a little while, Jandelee approached the car. “Um, hey. What are you doing?” she asked uneasily.
“Returning the favor,” Loderse said, smiling. “Try her now!”
Moiraine turned the key and instead of a hollow clunking sound, a low-rumbling hum of a perfectly tuned engine came from the car.
“Wow! I can’t believe it! Thanks so much!” Jandelee said, teary.
“You know, this is going to hurt your odds of winning the race,” squib pointed out.
“Yeah,” notMiceElf said, “but at least now it will be a fair fight.”
“So what are we waiting for?!” asked CrashCarson. “Let’s get going! See you at the finish line!”
“Ha! Not if we see you first!” Loderse laughed.
The Greasers and Geeks jumped into their cars and back into the race to the Blue Plate Special Diner!
