This is weird, i'm actually writing a paper on The ring of Gyges for my Philosophy class right now. It's actually "Gyges" by the way. Anyways, the moral of the story is that without consequence everyone will do the morally incorrect action. Hence the invisibility ring stripping Gyges of all possible punishments for his actions and this is to represent everyone. I can't say I completely agree with this theory though.
So there's Gyge, the sheepherder. A lamb runs into a cave, and Gyge follows in after it. He ends up in a tomb, and on the finger of this guy is a ring. Gyge freaks out, takes the ring and the lamb and runs like hell. After messing around with the ring, Gyge discovers that by turning it one way on his finger, he becomes invisible from everyone INCLUDING God. By turning it back, people can see him again. Gyge kills the King, seduces the Queen, and takes over the kingdom.
What would you do with this ring?
