Anti-Homophobia

Statistics;
- 97% of students in public high schools report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers.
- 2/3 of guidance counselors harbor negative feelings toward gay and lesbian people.
- 30% of gay and bisexual adolescent males attempt killing themselves at least once.
- Students who describe themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered are five times more likely to miss school because of feeling unsafe. 28% are forced to drop out.

Statistics;
- A survey of 191 employers revealed that 18% would fire, 27% would refuse to hire and 26% would refuse to promote a person they perceived to be lesbian, gay or bisexual.
- The vast majority of victims of anti-lesbian/gay violence - possibly more than 80% - never report the incident, often due to fear of being "outed".

Question & Answer
Q: What causes people to be prejudiced against gay and lesbian people?
A: There are many factors that can cause a person to be homophobic. Research has shown that prejudice against gay people and homosexuality can be influenced by the person:
- Having strong religious beliefs that disapprove of homosexuality
- Having little/no social contact with lesbian and gay people
- Reporting no homosexual experiences or feelings

I have launched an official advice column for our group to specifically reach out to those dealing with homophobia, or even those with general questions regarding orientation. The entire process, from question submission to answers is kept entirely anonymous to ensure a comfortable trusting quality that cannot be achieved otherwise. I look forward to reading any questions you may have.

    It is all about ignorance, this is why I no longer listen to when people say it is against one's religion to have a different prefrence. They need to get the bobba over themselves. Cannot wait until these imbeciles are wiped out from the earth, and the new generation comes in. They can do better than this.

    Oh, and I understand some people are strong while others are more sensitive, but I wouldn't be too sure your friend really isn't effected when people verbally attack him regarding his orientation. Some people's natural defense to verbal abuse is to put up a front as if it doesn't effect them. And even if your friend was that 'strong', I wouldn't base your sole opinion on the subject off of him/her. C:

    Open discussion if very nice. We all get to see the different opinions of others, and learn.

    While that may be true, the statistics I've posted on this page are from very professional studies that have been done. While I'm sure there are more serious cases of homophobia where someone can have some sort of attack when around a homosexual person, I personally don't believe they are born with that thought process. But then again, I'm no scientist. C;

    so what somone calls you a bobba, its a term don't get butthurt

    Some people arent as 'strong' some people are more sensitive.

  • PatheticMuch?

    It is a phobia, Phobia's come with you when you are born, You can't change that.

    Thats true, but usually when people say homophobia theyre talking about everyone, not just the people with the phobia, but the people who CHOSE to hate/judge them too, I cant think of a better word to describe them other than homophobe, though they dont actually have the phobia.

  • Mounts

    however im not a homophobe O:)

    Unfortnaly, Homophobia isn't obtained mostly by them thinking to be it like a religion, It is a phobia, Phobia's come with you when you are born, You can't change that.

    Homophobic people can get heart attacks, hyperventalate and shake near homo's.
