Edward is described by Meyer as so impossibly handsome that he is almost godlike. His skin is like marble--pale, hard as stone, and ice cold, but perfect and flawless. If he has recently fed, a slight flush can be detected on his cheeks, but this fades as he becomes thirstier. He has dark, purplish circles under his eyes--a vampire trait--that are lighter if he has recently eaten. In the sunlight his skin sparkles like millions of diamonds casting mini-rainbows everywhere.

His eyes change color depending on the amount of blood in his body; they are described as a topaz color when he has just fed and gradually darken to black, like onyx, as his thirst progresses--it takes about two weeks for them to darken from their lightest color to pitch black. The darker his eyes, the thirstier he is. His hair is described both as a strange shade of bronze and as an auburn and is always in "casual disarray." In the end he is described as unhuminly beautiful.
