The Food They Eat

The food that polar bears eat the most are seals. They also eat walruses, fish, whales, birds, and plants. Polar bears sometimes eat berries and leaves but mostly meat. They also aim for humans because of the loss of food.

Baby polar bears often starve. In fact, 70 percent do not live to their third birthday. Sometimes seals are hard to find, especially in the summer when the ice has melted. All across the Arctic, man is moving in to mine oil and coal and there is less space for the polar bear to live.

Habitat

Polar bears live only in the Arctic pack ice. When the weather gets warm, the bears move north then return in the winter. Polar bears live in the following seven countries: United States of America, Canada, Siberia, Alaska, Greenland, Norway, & Russia. These strong bears love to swim. The temperature inside the mother bear's den might be 40 degrees warmer then the temperature out side.

Did You Know?

Polar bears are the world's largest terrestrial carnivore. They are excellent swimmers and spend most of their life in or around water. As the southern edge of the Arctic ice cap melts, Polar bears follow the retreating sea ice in the Polar bear's hunting grounds is melting earlier and forming later each year. If present trends continue, this "king of the great white north" could be extinct by the end of this century.

Senses

Polar bears stand on their back legs to see better and sniff at things. They can see pretty well but they have a very good sense of smell! They can smell a dead whale 20 miles away. They are able to sniff out seal dens covered with a lot of snow and ice to find this tasty meal. It's good they can smell so well otherwise it would be hard for them to get their prey and survive

Why is this species important?

Large carnivores are sensitive indicators of ecosystem health. Polar bears are studied to gain an understanding of what is happening throughout the Arctic as a polar bear at risk is often a sign of something wrong somewhere in the arctic marine ecosystem

  • randomness33

We have to take a stand in this!! We can't let this happen to any animal, and especially not polar bears! I believe that they are the dominant animal on Earth!! Let them live! Stand up to factories, ask them to consider the fact that many animals are becoming endangered, and it is mostly because of air and water pollution!! Take a stand, even the smallest person can change the way the Earth is.

  • haunnahh

not JUST polar bears. Look around us, wat do u see? houses? factories? dead animals? Wat do you taste and smell in the air Pollution? litter? exactly. Gods biggest mistake ws putting humans on this earth
