Is Atheism A Religion?

Unlike a religion, atheism is not organized under a common doctrine (belief system). The only shared opinion among atheists is the nonexistence of a deity. There are a few common beliefs among atheists such as views regarding morality, religion and spirituality, but these beliefs vary greatly and are outside the definition of atheism and thus are not required to be an atheist.

Free-Thought
Thought unrestrained by authority, tradition, or established belief, especially in matters of religion.

Humanism
Ethical theory and practice that emphasizes human interests, values, and dignity by way of reason, scientific inquiry, and human fulfillment in the natural world and often rejects the importance of belief in God.

Skepticism
A skeptical attitude or doubt towards supernatural or unproven claims.

Paths to atheism
Every atheist has his own story about how he became an atheist. No atheist takes only one path; there are often many factors that take one to atheism. These factors are grouped into four distinct categories or "paths to atheism". An atheist may be the result of any combination and degree of the four paths. Share your path in our Discussion board.

Discovery atheists
This is the most common path taken to atheism. The individual discovers their lack of belief in a god or gods by way of examining the definition of and the beliefs surrounding the existence of a god or gods. The disbelief or lack of belief is found either by concluding that the god cannot exist or that there is no reason to believe that the god exists.

Natural (Unknown concept) atheists
This is probably the least common path to atheism taken by adults. This is due to the aggressiveness and commonness of religion. When the concept of the existence of a deity is unknown, the individual is an atheist. A newborn baby is an atheist; the idea of a god is something that is taught or discovered.

Materialism
Preoccupation with or emphasis on material objects, comforts, and considerations, with a disinterest in or rejection of spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values.

Objectivism
A philosophy created by Ayn Rand that holds the validity of objective phenomena over subjective experience.

Rationalism
From Latin "reason". In philosophy, it’s a theory that holds that reason alone, unaided by experience, can arrive at basic truth regarding the world.

Statistics
850 Million Secularists, Non-Religious, Agnostic and Atheists in the world. That's about 15% or more than 1 out of 10 people, making this the fourth largest 'religious' belief grouping.

The population of non-believers in the USA is about 10% and 10-25% in Europe.

Most studies of the hightly educated and scientists show a higher proportion of atheists and non-believers.

Prison populations appear to have a lower proportion of Atheists and non-believers.

Strong and Weak Atheism

Agnosticism:
Someone who is unsure of the existance of a god or gods.
*This is not a form of Atheism

Weak Atheism:
Stating that you do not believe in a god or gods.

Strong Atheism:
Asserting that God does not or can not exist.

Reactionary atheists
The individual finds that the beliefs of a particular religion does not fit them or has let them down and rebels against it by heading in the opposite direction towards non-belief.

Indoctrinated atheists
This situation is where atheism is freely or forcibly taught to the individual. It is also possible for an individual to indoctrinate themself.

Atheism Defined
Atheism (A'thE-iz"um),-n, is defined as:
1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

The term atheism comes from the Greek word atheos, meaning godless. Atheos is derived form a, meaning "without," and theos, meaning "deity".

Atheism is to be distinguished from agnosticism, which leaves open the question whether there is a god or not.

I am not as active as I used to be, but I know this group will live on. It will inspire others to be proud of what they believe in, and help people make friends on at least one common ground.     I'd rather rot in "hell" than believe in something that doesn't exist. Its like being on drugs seriously. There is no proof bring me some proof and God could be real.

    It's all fiction if you believe the stuff that the bible says then Dr Who must be real and Santa isn't our parents dressed up for fun.

    Did you know that science has saved more lives then ended, and the ones that ended weren't caused by science, but stupidity?
    Chrisitianity and other religions have sparked more wars, have had more deaths in the name of their abigious and questionable Gods than science -- which I remind you in the systematic way of branching knowledge -- has killed. Science is an art, a, well, it's a science! You can't kill people with it, but through it some things can be created that can kill.

    Did they tell you they can prevent malaria? They're learning how to prevent cancer and heart disease and so on so parents can watch their children grow up? Do they tell you that they're looking into things that others are too afraid to look into-- because of their religious restrictions?

    Yup it's supposed to be that when the calender ends the world ends... i found a site that said it will end 2012 at 11:11 am ... But it won't so don't worry. Even researchers have said that it will restart a new cycle on that day. When the calender stops it will start all over again. So no'one will die. But i bet on 2012 all the news will talk about it

    I have been going to church since i was born, let me tell you guys something... When i pray which i do what ever i pray for always comes true... 1 day i felt like something was following me hearing noises i just prayed i felt better...
