More modern developments began during the early 1900's, where the use of eye protection became more widespread.
Movie stars of silent movies were believed to wear sunglasses to avoid recognition by fans, however, that was not the case.
Movie stars simply wore them due to eye pain from the powerful arc lights that were needed during filming, because film stocks were extremely slow back then.

It wasn't until many years later that a use of eye protection came about again.
A fella by the name of James Ayscough began experimenting with different kinds of tinted lenses in spectacles during the mid-18th century. However, they still weren't the sunglasses we know and love today. Ayscough believed that blue or green tinted glass could correct vision impairments.

Did you know it is estimated that forms of sunglasses were used mostly in China during the 12th century? WOW! Thats a long time ago! I wonder what they looked like...
Some experts say that the Roman emperor Nero used emeralds to help block harmful glares to his eyes while watching gladiator fights. What a smart fella! ;)

Inexpensive mass-produced sunglasses were introduced to America by a man named Sam Foster in 1929. That year, Foster found a ready market on the sunny beaches of Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he began selling his sunglasses under the name Foster Grant from a Woolworth on the Boardwalk.
I guess its safe to say that the first sunglasses ever sold came from the Boardwalk! Pretty cool. ;)
