“Why do bad things happened to good people,” may really be asking “I’m not sure that God exists.” That’s a completely different question. The question of God’s existence has nothing to do with the issue of suffering. It has to do with creation, revelation at Sinai, world history, etc. So we should be clear that the question we are dealing with here is not “Does God exist?” It’s “Why do bad things happen to good people?”
